Half-day weekend getaways from Nagpur, under 50 km
Waki Woods (~33 km) — The easiest genuine escape from the city. River, light trekking, boating and birdwatching, and close enough to be back for lunch.
Adasa (~40 km) — A small hill settlement known for its Ganpati temple, one of the Ashtavinayak-style shrines of the region. Quiet, and quick enough for a morning.
Day-trip weekend getaways from Nagpur, 50 to 100 km
Ramtek (~50 km) — The standard cultural day trip from Nagpur. A hilltop temple complex with strong Ramayana associations, wide views over the plains, and Khindsi Lake nearby for boating. Combine the two and it fills a full day comfortably.
Ambhora (~65 km) — Where five rivers meet. Temples, open water, and a slow pace. Good for a day when you want scenery rather than activity.
Pench National Park (~78–100 km depending on gate) — Royal Bengal tigers, along with leopard, gaur, sloth bear, wild dog and large antelope populations. Pench is the forest that inspired Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, which is a fair claim to fame for somewhere two hours away. Morning and evening safaris; book in advance.
Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary (~85 km) — The insider’s choice. Genuine tiger sightings with a fraction of the crowds and vehicle pressure of Tadoba. If Tadoba is booked out, this is not a consolation prize.
Longer weekend getaways from Nagpur, over 100 km
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (~140–150 km) — In Chandrapur district, the oldest and largest national park in Maharashtra, and among the best places in India to actually see a tiger rather than merely hope to. This deserves an overnight stay. Of all the weekend getaways from Nagpur this is the one to plan properly: safari permits open online well in advance and the good slots go quickly, particularly for winter weekends.
Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve (~130–150 km) — Quieter than Tadoba, with a large lake, dense forest and outstanding birdlife. A good choice if you want forest without the safari-jeep convoy experience.
Pachmarhi (~226–260 km) — Madhya Pradesh’s only hill station, in the Satpura range. Waterfalls, caves, dense forest and genuinely cool weather. Two nights is the right length.
Chikhaldara (~230 km) — Maharashtra’s only coffee-growing hill station, in the Melghat region. Valleys, waterfalls, lakes and Melghat Tiger Reserve nearby. Considerably less developed than Pachmarhi, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on you.
Lonar Crater (~290 km) — A meteorite impact crater with a saline lake at its base, one of very few of its kind in the world formed in basaltic rock. Geologically remarkable and unlike anywhere else in the region.

- Safari booking — Permits for Pench, Tadoba, Umred-Karhandla and Navegaon-Nagzira open online in advance through the forest department portal. Winter weekends sell out. Book before you book the hotel.
- Season for tiger sightings — Summer, March to June, offers the highest chance as animals gather at water sources. It is also punishingly hot. Winter is far more comfortable and far more crowded.
- Monsoon closures — Core zones of most tiger reserves close during monsoon, typically July to September. Check before setting out; buffer zones sometimes stay open.
- Roads — NH-44, NH-6 and NH-930 carry most of these routes and are generally good. Rural approach roads to sanctuary gates are the weak link, particularly after rain.
- Start early — Morning safaris begin around dawn. For anything over 100 km, that means leaving Nagpur the previous evening.
