Nagpur does not market itself to tourists, which is exactly why it rewards visitors who look properly. 1. Zero Mile Stone
A sandstone pillar marking the point the British used as the reference for surveying colonial India during the Great Trigonometrical Survey. A stone beside the monument carries the year 1907 along with elevation details. It is popularly described as the geographical centre of India, though that claim has never been firmly established.
The structure is a circular base roughly 7.9 metres in diameter, topped with a hexagonal sandstone column about 6.5 metres high. Four stone horses stand alongside it. It sits near the Gowari Shahid Memorial, on the way towards the Reserve Bank of India.
Distance: About 2 km from Nagpur railway station. Entry: Free. Realistically a fifteen-minute stop, but it is the monument the city’s identity rests on. Directions
2. Deekshabhoomi
One of the most significant Buddhist sites in India and among the largest hollow Buddhist stupas in the world. It marks the spot where Dr B. R. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism along with several hundred thousand followers on 14 October 1956 — one of the largest religious conversions in recorded history.
The stupa is built in white marble, and the scale only registers when you are standing inside it. Enormous crowds gather around Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din each year.

3. Futala Lake
Around 200 years old and covering roughly 60 acres, Futala — also known as Telankhedi Lake — was built under the Bhosle rulers. It has been Nagpur’s evening gathering place for generations, ringed by food stalls and lit up after dark. A major redevelopment has added a floating musical fountain, a food court and multi-level parking.

4. Dragon Palace Temple, Kamptee
A Buddhist temple inaugurated in 1999, sometimes called the Lotus Temple of Nagpur for its architecture. Built with Japanese support, it is calm, immaculately maintained and strikingly different in character from anything else in the region. Worth the short drive to Kamptee. Directions

- Ambazari Lake — The largest of Nagpur’s lakes, with a garden alongside and walking paths. The standard weekend family outing.
- Gorewada Lake — Lake and dam together, and enough space to make a full day of it. The Gorewada zoo and biopark project sits nearby.
- Seminary Hills — Green, elevated and quiet. The best place in the city for a morning walk.
- Maharajbagh Zoo — Central and compact, with a botanical garden attached. Easy to combine with other city stops.
- Khindsi Lake — Near Ramtek, popular for boating and water sports.

- Sitabuldi Fort — Built on the hill in the heart of the city, site of the decisive 1817 battle between the Bhosles and the British. Access is restricted as it is under army control, so check opening arrangements before going.
